Why a shared activity helps

Dinner and a movie are both sitting down, facing the same way. An activity gives you something to do with your hands and something to laugh about, which is why couples often talk more on a hike than at a restaurant.

It doesn't have to be a sport. Gardening, a pottery class or a flea market counts. What matters is that it is new to at least one of you.

When one of you is sportier than the other

Pick things where skill doesn't decide the fun: mini golf, bowling, pickleball, an easy bike ride. For running or the gym, go at the slower person's pace or do the same session side by side at different intensities.

And if one of you would rather watch than play, the list has a section for that too: going to a game, adopting a team for a season, or a fantasy league against each other.
